High school football gets underway Friday night (Aug. 20th). Area teams scrimmaged last week, but the games this Friday are the first official games of the season. North Lincoln and East Lincoln move to 3A this year and into a new conference that will also include Hickory, Fred T. Foard, St. Stephens, North Iredell, West Iredell & Statesville. Lincolnton and West Lincoln remain 2A and their new conference will be much like the old South Fork. East and North are gone, but Maiden, Newton-Conover, and Bandys remain along with East Burke and West Caldwell as new teams in the league.
Friday night's schedule has North Lincoln playing at West Lincoln, Lincolnton at South Point, East Lincoln at Hibriten, Fred T. Foard at Maiden, St. Stephens at Bandys, and Cherryville at Avery County.
The new Western Foothills 3A league will start home games at 7 PM. The Catawba Valley 2A will begin varsity games at 7:30. This week's local varsity games all have a 7:30 start time.
JV games start at 7 PM. This week's schedule for Thursday evening has Lincolnton's JVs hosting South Point, North Lincoln hosting West Lincoln, East Lincoln hosting Hibriten, Maiden's JVs at Fred T. Foard (that JV game will start at 7:30).
High school volleyball is also underway. West Lincoln will host Cherryville at 4:30 Thursday afternoon. Cherryville has already played two matches; they lost to Forestview Tuesday 3-0, then won 3-2 over Chase on Wednesday. West opened at East Lincoln on Wednesday (Aug. 18th). East Lincoln lost their first match to Kings Mtn. 3-0 Tuesday.
North Lincoln lost to Bandys Tuesday 3-0. They won at Maiden on Wednesday 3-1. Thursday (Aug. 19th) they'll travel to South Point.
Lincolnton will host Thomas Jefferson at 6 PM Thursday.
Girls tennis is also underway. East Lincoln beat Lincoln Charter 8-1 on Tuesday. Lincoln Charter will play at Lake Norman at 4 PM Thursday. West Lincoln hosted Cherryville on Wednesday. North Lincoln and Lincolnton were scheduled to play Wednesday. On Thursday, North plays at Shelby (4 PM). Maiden will host Foard Thursday (4 PM). Foard lost to Alexander Central Wednesday 7-2.
Maiden lost to Foard 3-0 on Tuesday and North Lincoln Wednesday. They'll be at Lincoln Charter this Thursday at 6 PM. The Lincoln Charter girls won their match with Piedmont Charter last Tuesday 3-1. After hosting Maiden Thursday, they'll play at Bunker Hill on Friday (Aug. 20th).
Boys soccer is also underway. East Lincoln lost to Forestview on Wednesday 4-3. They'll play at Lincolnton on Monday (August 23rd). West Lincoln opened against Cherryville on Wednesday. The Rebels will host Lincoln Charter on Monday (Aug. 23rd). The Eagles will open their season at Gaston Christian on Thursday at 6 PM.
North Lincoln will open its season at North Gaston on Monday (Aug. 23rd).
