If you’re keeping score, COVID has scored again!  We warned when we posted this week’s high school football schedule that it was subject to change.  We already knew that West Lincoln, originally scheduled to have a bye week, would play at Ashbrook this Friday.  The Rebels' game with Fred T. Foard last Friday was canceled because the Tigers were under COVID protocol.  The West JV team won't play this week.  WLON, Lincolnton (1050AM, 107.5FM) will broadcast the West Lincoln @ Ashbrook game.  You can hear it online at ktcbroadcasting.com

Maiden High School's game at St. Stephens last Friday was also nixed by COVID.  The Blue Devils had arranged a game for this Friday at Monroe.  Now, because of COVID, Monroe has canceled.  Maiden’s varsity will play at home Friday (7:30 PM) against Christ School from Asheville. The Maiden JVs will play at home Thursday evening against the Shelby JVs.

The off again, on again North Iredell at Bunker Hill game will be played Friday night according to  Bears Athletic Director James Byrd.  Byrd said Thursday that the game will be played (7:30 Friday evening) even though North Iredell has been hit with the virus so bad they’ve canceled in-person classes and gone to remote learning.

Shelby’s game with Hibriten has also been a COVID victim.  The Panthers are on COVID protocol.  The Golden Lions will now play South Carolina powerhouse South Pointe (Rock Hill).  That game will  be broadcast by WOHS, Shelby (1390AM, 101.5FM) and will also be available online at ktcbroadcasting.com

Shelby and Crest have rescheduled their Cleveland County rivalry game that was originally scheduled for last Friday (Sept. 3rd). If all goes well, and with COVID causing many cancellations, one can't be sure, the two will meet October 8th at Shelby's Blanton stadium. The game had to be postponed from last week due to Crest having issues with COVID-19.

The Chargers were originally scheduled to have this week off, but arranged to move their Oct. 8th game at North Gaston up to this week (Friday Sept. 10th) since both schools had an open date this week. Shelby's schedule had Oct. 8th listed as an open date.

Except for West Lincoln, Lincoln County teams will have this week off.

Newton-Conover, which lost its first game of the season at Polk County, then had games with West Iredell and Hickory called off because of COVID, first at the Iredell County school and then at Newton-Conover, has arranged a home game this Friday with South Caldwell.  WNNC, Newton (1230AM, 101.3FM) will carry that game this Friday.  They'll also have reports from other games involving Catawba County teams.  You can hear the game online at https://wnncradio.com/football/.

WCSL, Cherryville (1590AM, 92.3FM) will broadcast the Cherryville @ Chase game.  You can also hear it online at ktcbroadcasting.com

This week’s schedule—as of Thursday morning has:

West Lincoln @ Ashbrook

Christ School @ Maiden

South Pointe @ Shelby

Cherryville @ Chase

Burns @ Watauga

Crest @ North Gaston

Christ the King @ Bessemer City

Draughn @ Highland Tech

Union Academy @ Mtn. Island Charter

Lincolnton is idle this week, but the Wolves are scheduled to open Catawba Valley Conference play next Friday (Sept. 17th) hosting Bunker Hill.

The East Lincoln Mustangs also have this week off, a welcome opportunity for some healing of injuries. They'll open their Western Foothills 3A schedule at Hickory on Sept. 17th. The East @ Hickory game will be live streamed on the NFHS Network (https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/east-lincoln-high-school-denver-nc) It isn't free--but if you can't make it to Hickory for the game, you can subscribe and watch it online.

North Lincoln is also off this week. The Knights open conference play at Statesville on the 17th.  That game will also be live streamed on the NFHS network (https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/north-lincoln-high-school-lincolnton-nc/football).  You have to pay for a subscription to see it.

Other games on next week’s schedule (so far at least) have:

West Lincoln @ Bandys
Maiden @ East Burke
Cherryville @ Shelby
Forestview @ North Gaston
Kings Mtn. @ Hunter Huss
Stuart Cramer @ South Point
Cherokee @ East Gaston
Bandys @ South Caldwell
St. Stephens @ West Iredell
Fred T. Foard @ North Iredell
Newton-Conover @ West Caldwell
Highland Tech @ Burns
Bessemer City @ Thomas Jefferson Academy
