The Lincolnton soccer team is now 8-0-1, 6-0 in the Catawba Valley Conference, and ranked #1 among 2A teams in the western region of North Carolina. The Wolves beat Maiden for their eight win without a loss (the only blemish on their record is a tie with Forestview in early September). Last Wednesday’s match was a 9-0 romp.
LHS Coach Brad Bagan said, “the biggest highlight of the night was freshman Chuy "Baby Shark" Blanco-Tellez scoring the 1st, middle and final goals of the night to complete a ‘hat trick.’ He also had two assists.
“He get his nickname because like a shark he senses blood in the water, and both the team and fans have started lovingly singing the Baby Shark song every time he finds the back of the net. Once he finds a way to hit his peak consistently, he will be one of the most vaunted attacking players in the state; and alongside sophmores A-Aron Lail and Alvaro Rodriguez, this front three is going to be one of the most dangerous in the state for the next couple of years.
“Jarrett Trejo scored one of our goals, and both 2020-21 All-Region selection A-Aron Lail and All-Conference Alvaro Rodriguez netted a goal and an assist each. Senior center back Kevin Calvo racked up three assists; senior right back Zander Harrison had a goal, and senior left back Edwin Oliva also had a goal and an assist to senior Andre Abernathy-Ocampo, who got his first of the season.”
Coach Bagan had praise for the effort of the Maiden team & coahes: “While over matched on the night, they at no point showed any desire to quit or lack of sportsmanship as you can sometimes see in lopsided contests. They continued to fight until the final whistle sounded and their performance was highlighted by their sophmore goalkeeper, who came up with at least six saves. Our goalkeeper, Sam Carpenter, had seven saves and another shutout.”
The Wolves will play at West Lincoln on Monday. That match has been moved to a 5:30 start. Other games Monday have East Lincoln at North Iredell, North Lincoln at West Iredell, Newton-Conover at Maiden, Bandys at Bunker Hill, and Hickory at Fred T. Foard. The East Lincoln at North Iredell and North Lincoln at West Iredell games will be on the NFHS Network for subscribers. Their camera angles are terrible; they often miss showing goals, but if you can’t get to the game, at least you can see—most of it.
Lincoln Charter will play at Pine Lake Prep Tuesday; Cherryville will host Highland Tech.
Also coming up Tuesday is the rematch of Lincolnton and East Lincoln. LHS won the first meeting of the two by a 2-1 score. The Mustangs are currently in second place in the Western Foothills Conference behind Fred T. Foard.
On Wednesday, LHS will host Bunker Hill, East Lincoln will host North Lincoln, Maiden will host East Burke, Lincoln Charter will play at Langtree Academy, and West Lincoln will be at Bandys.
Cherryville will play at Bandys on Thursday.
