Even if Cherryville Post 100 wins their Thursday afternoon (1 PM) game with Randolph County, the likelihoo is that they won't make it to the semifinals on Friday of the North Carolina state American Legion baseball tournament.
Post 100 lost thier Wednesday night meeting with defending state champions Fuquay-Varina 10-3. They had won on Tuesday, so like all the other teams with the exception of Hope Mills, which has yet to win, and Randolph County, which is unbeaten, they are now 1-1. If teams end up in a tie, the team that has allowed the least runs in pool play will get the nod to the semi-fnals, and Post 100 has given up 14 runs in two games.
Their Thursday opponent is already assured a spot in the Southeast Regionals because they are the host team.
Fuquay-Varina scored in every inning but one on Wednesday night. They started the game with two doubles followed by a batter being hit by a pitch. They scored the first run of the game and it could have been worse but an attempt to score on a short fly ball saw the runnner thrown out easily at the plate, so it was 1-0 as Post 100 came to bat.
Landon Hahn started things off with a single to center field, then he and Zane Brockman executed the hit and run and Hahn was on second. Kohl Irby hit the ball back to the pitcher, but when he couldn't handle it, Irby was safe at first and Hahn went to third. Hahn was later caught in a rundown between third and home, but interference was called on the pitcher and Hahn scored, tying the game at 1-all.
In the third inning, the first five Fuquay-Varina batters all reached safely, and when their half of the inning was over, they had scored six times and led 7-1.
Post 100 scored a pair of runs in the fourth and trailed 8-3, but that was as close as they got. They didn't score again, and Fuquay-Varina added another run in the sixth and seventh innings for the 10-3 win.
The 1 PM Thursday game will be broadcast by WCSL (1590 AM, 92.9 FM) and also available on ktcbroadcasting.com. WLON (1050 AM, 107.5 FM) will also broadcast the game.
