Post 100 Wins Thursday
now it's wait and see if they make the state tournament semi-finals

Wayne Howard

The Cherryville Post 100 American Legion baseball team did what they had to do; now they have to wait to see if it was enough.

Going into Thursday's game with previously unbeaten Randolph County Post 45, they had to win, and they did. But will the 7-3 victory get them into the semifinals of the state tournament? We won't know until later Thursday night when all of the day's games are completed.

With the win, Cherryville is now 2-1, but so is Randolph County; so is Queen City and Wilmington.  Who gets in and who doesn't is based on the number of runs allowed.  Post 100 gave up 17 runs in their three games. Randolph County is almost certainly in--they lost Thursday, but they gave up only one run in their other two games.

Cherryville scored three runs in the first inning Thursday afternoon and never trailed. Landon Hahn led off with a single and Landon Jenkins had two rbi's. They added two more in the second and another in the third for a 6-0 lead before Randolph County finally scored in the bottom of the third. They could have cut the lead more; they left the bases loaded, but both teams left a lot of runners on base in this game.

In the top of the fourth, Post 100 loaded the bases with nobody out, but scored only a single run and also left the bases loaded.

Randolph County's Blake Marsh started the fifth with a triple. Two batters later, the ball was hit back to the pitcher and it should have been an out with Marsh caught short trying to score, but a bad throw allowed a run. A single later scored another, but Alex Martinez decided to try for second and didn't make it, so the score was 7-3 after five innings. Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh.

Zane Brockman was the winning pitcher. The right-hander went five-and-a=third innings, gave up eight hits and three runs.

For Post 100 to make the semi-finals, Hope Mills Post 32, the team they beat Tuesday and the only team that hasn't won a game, either has to beat Fuquay-Varina Thursday night or score 9 or more runs; if they do, Cherryville will play on Friday.
