Saturday (Sep. 20th) was designated as the day for the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America, so Bree Helms, daughter of Jesse and Angee Helms, was joined by friends who walked as a group in the Rotary Fun Run/Walk to raise money for the cause.  Bree told us:  "My journey with Chiari Malformation began in 2008. Over a year I saw many doctors who couldn’t explain my symptoms: stabbing pain in my back, severe headaches, and numbness and tingling in my left arm. Finally in March 2009  doctors found the cause with an MRI. Less than a month later on April 16, 2009 I had my first Chiari Malformation decompression surgery. My cerebellar tonsils were shrunk, I had one inch of my skull removed, my top vertebrae was shaved to a shelf, and my brain is now being held up by a mesh patch. My herniation was 12mm, which could be life threatening in some cases. After the surgery everything was great. Six months later, my neurosurgeon gave me the okay to slowly go back to tumbling for Twist and Tuck. He knew I wanted to compete nationally. In 2011 I placed 9th for my level and age group in at the Trampoline and Tumbling Junior Olympic Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Shortly after that my symptoms came back with a vengeance. I had my second surgery on March 16, 2012.  I’m thankful the Lord kept me on this earth to be an advocate for Chiari. I’m also thankful for my family and friends that help me deal with my daily symptoms."
