Apple Queen Ana Ochoa was there. The Knights of Columbus were there. Lisa Frazier, who has been involved with Special Olympics for 35 years and Lincoln County Co-ordinator for 23 years was there. Kirk Herbertson, who contributes photos to the Lincoln Herald was there as Special Olympics of Lincoln County celebrated the 50th birthday of Special Olympics of North Carolina and held the Spring games at Lincolnton High School stadium the last Friday in April.
Kirk, a former Special Olympics athlete himself, will tell you that one's focus should be on his or her abilities and not disabilities. Kirk has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, yet he was elected a member of the Lincoln County Board of Education.
It was a special day--in every way--and Kirk's photos have preserved some of the joy of that day for us to share with our readers.
