LINCOLNTON––It’s time once again for the annual Robinson-Lineberger Literary Competition.

Arts Council of Lincoln County spokeswoman Deanna McGinnis said Thursday that the organization is preparing now for the 37th such competition. The deadline for postmarked entries is April 13.

As McGinnis explained, the trustees of Flo Robinson’s estate established this competition to memorialize her lifelong interest in poetry and prose and to encourage writers to pursue excellence in their craft. The Robert Lineberger estate added its support to ensure that this tradition continues to give a voice to so many members of the Lincoln County community.

Poetry entries are limited to one per person: on any subject, in any style, free verse, blank verse or rhymed. Each should be limited to 32 lines or less. Prose entries are likewise limited to one per person: an essay or short story on any subject, limited to about 750 words. Entries in both categories must be titled, original, unpublished and must never have won a cash award before.

The competition is open to students in the Lincoln County Schools and to adults. Only students have to be from Lincoln County. Adults may be from neighboring counties. Each school is asked to screen its entries and must submit only the best works. Student entries must come through the school and not be delivered individually to the LCS Central Office or to the Arts Council of Lincoln County.

Prize money will be divided between prose and poetry in the following categories. First-prize winners in grades three through 12 will get $40 each. Second and third-places honors will respectively merit $25 and $15 each. And adults 18 years of age and older will respectively win $60, $40 and $25 for first, second and third-place honors.

Submit two typewritten, double-spaced copies of your entry. One copy must include the following information in the upper right-hand corner: full name (age, if a student), address, telephone number, category (prose or poetry), age group (grade levels or adult status), e-mail address and school name. The second copy should include only the poem, essay or story, with no identification.

Late entries will not be accepted. Mail all entries by April 13 to:

The Arts Council of Lincoln County Literary Competition
P.O. Box 45
Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

An Internet-based awards ceremony and reading for students will be held and posted on the schools’ and the arts council’s social media and Websites. An awards ceremony for adults will be held April 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the arts council galleries at the Lincoln Cultural Center.

This project received support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
