Luke Stewart

Thomas Lark
Staff Writer

You might say that he’s wrestled his way to the top of the class of ’21.

He’s West Lincoln High wrestling stand-out Luke Stewart, and he is the co-salutatorian for this year’s senior class of Rebels. Stewart is sharing this year’s number-two spot with Alexzia Hallman (see separate article).

Stewart last is the son of Shannon and Anita Stewart and the brother of Ethan and Jack Stewart.

Of his time at WLHS, Stewart said his favorite teacher was mathematics instructor Jeff Hallman; his favorite school-related memory was being a starting member of two North Carolina High School Athletic Association dual-championship wrestling teams.

The future looks bright for Stewart, who recently earned a four-year US Army ROTC scholarship to Furman University in Greenville, SC.  “I plan to major in business,” he said.

Following the fulfillment of his military obligations, Stewart hopes to become licensed in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) and plumbing work.  “In 10 years,” he said, “I would like to be self-employed as a mechanical/plumbing contractor.”

Stewart shared some parting words for his classmates, and extended his gratitude to his coaches and to the members of his church.

“I remind my fellow classmates to work hard in all endeavors,” he said, “work, school or military. Take advantage of all opportunities, and never back down from a challenge.

“I’d like to thank coaches Butch Ross, Wayne Navey and David Avery and many others for the many memories I have experienced on the wrestling team at West Lincoln,” he added. “I’d also like to thank my church family at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church for their support.”
