ALEXIS, N.C.  --- Tri-County Animal Rescue has a Labrador Retriever mixed pup named Rowdy as our Pet of the Week.  Rowdy is almost a year old.  He is full of puppy energy and stops to sleep.  Rowdy has no fear.  He loves all people and other pets.  Rowdy has a beautiful short hair coat of black and white.  Grooming is a bath and towel dry.  Rowdy is neutered, current on vaccines and micro-chipped.  Please come meet this baby this weekend.

The Labrador Retriever is one terrific family dog -- given enough vigorous exercise (preferably including swimming and fetching games) and not just a walk around the block once a day. Too much confinement and not enough exercise can lead to rambunctiousness and destructive chewing.

One of the best dogs for children of all ages, Labrador Retrievers are kindly, good-natured, and take most things in stride. Most Labrador Retrievers are very friendly with everyone, though compared to Golden Retrievers, many Labs are just a bit more conservative with their affections.  Also more independent -- though quite biddable and responsive to obedience training, some Labrador Retrievers can have a noticeable stubborn streak. Some have necks like bulls and barely notice tugs on the leash.

You must control this breed's tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys that he can carry around in his mouth. The Labrador Retriever matures slowly, remaining a spirited teenager for several years, which sounds fun . . . but does require patience and training to manage.

If you want a dog who…

  • Is large and bouncy, with an enthusiastic attitude toward life
  • Has a short easy-care coat
  • Has a cheerful, tail-wagging nature
  • Thrives on exercise and athletic activities
  • Is steady-tempered and dependable with everyone
  • Is peaceful with other animals
  • Is eager to please and responsive to training

Then a Labrador Retriever may be right for you.

Meet another of Tri-County Animal Rescues Pet of the Week: Jasper is a Terrier/Beagle mix.  Jasper is about 7 months old and is looking for someone to love.  He is a good little man that has lots of energy and loves to play.  He weighs about 25-30 pounds.  Jasper should not get any bigger. He has the cutest little underbite that makes him smile all the time.  Jasper will make a great pet for a family with kids.  He would love to be your 4-legged buddy. Jasper is neutered, current on vaccines and micro-chipped.  Please give Jasper a chance to become part of your family!

Beagles are extremely popular dogs because of their gentle, even-tempered nature. With minimal socialization, your beagle will bond strongly with people, be gentle with children and get along with other dogs. Beagles are loyal to their families and often highly affectionate.  Beagles are highly energetic dogs, which means your pup will always be thrilled to play fetch or chase with your family. The downside of this is that beagles can become destructive if they don't get enough exercise. At minimum, they need an hour of exercise daily in the form of brisk walking or running and intellectually stimulating games. Some beagles, particularly puppies and young adults, may need much more exercise than this.

BIRTHDAY DONATION --- This is Natalie Day and she is in 1st grade at Carr Elementary School.  For her 7th birthday she asked her family and friends to bring dog and cat supplies in lieu of gifts. Natalie wanted to provide donations to Tri-County Animal Rescue instead of receiving gifts for herself! What an amazing young girl. Thank you Natalie for your generosity. The dogs and cats say thank you too!
