ALEXIS  --- Tri-County Animal Rescue Pet of the Week is this Australian Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix named Wally.  Wally is 2-years-old and weighs about 55-65 pounds.  He has lots of energy so a fenced yard is a must!  Wally loves to play and can go for hours.  He is the sweetest dog that loves kisses.  Wally thinks he is a small dog and will curl up on your lap if possible.  He has a short Aussie tail that wags non-stop.  Wally is neutered, current on vaccines and micro-chipped.  He will be looking for you this weekend!

This is an athletic dog of medium/large size and bone; it is lithe, agile and slightly longer than it is tall. Its gait is free and easy, and it must be able to change direction or speed instantly. It has a beautiful coat with medium texture and length, straight to wavy.  Frequent brushing, warm baths and thorough blow drying will help keep the hair under control. The expression is keen, intelligent and eager.

The Australian shepherd has a great deal of stamina and is loving, bold, alert, confident, independent, smart and responsive. If it doesn't get a chance to exercise and challenge its strongly developed mental and physical activities, it is apt to become frustrated and difficult to live with. With proper exercise and training, it is a loyal, utterly devoted and obedient companion. It is reserved with strangers and has a protective nature. It may try to herd children and small animals by nipping.

Tri-County Animal Rescue has a Labrador Retriever mix named Zoe as our Puppy of the Week.  Zoe is about 5-months-old and has lots of puppy energy.  She is sweet as pie and loves to be with her person. Zoe walks good on a leash, loves everyone she meets, good with kids, good with all other dogs and cats. She has a beautiful short hair coat of black and white.  Grooming is a bath and towel dry.  Zoe is spayed, current on vaccines and micro-chipped.  Please come meet this beautiful girl this weekend.

The Labrador Retriever is one terrific family dog -- given enough vigorous exercise (preferably including swimming and fetching games) and not just a walk around the block once a day. Too much confinement and not enough exercise can lead to rambunctiousness and destructive chewing.

One of the best dogs for children of all ages, Labrador Retrievers are kindly, good-natured, and take most things in stride. Most Labrador Retrievers are very friendly with everyone, though compared to Golden Retrievers, many Labs are just a bit more conservative with their affections.  Also, more independent -- though quite biddable and responsive to obedience training, some Labrador Retrievers can have a noticeable stubborn streak. Some have necks like bulls and barely notice tugs on the leash.

You must control this breed's tendency to chew on objects and to mouth your hands -- provide a box filled with toys that he can carry around in his mouth. The Labrador Retriever matures slowly, remaining a spirited teenager for several years, which sounds fun . . . but does require patience and training to manage.

If you want a dog who…

  • Is large and bouncy, with an enthusiastic attitude toward life
  • Has a short easy-care coat
  • Has a cheerful, tail-wagging nature
  • Thrives on exercise and athletic activities
  • Is steady-tempered and dependable with everyone
  • Is peaceful with other animals
  • Is eager to please and responsive to training

Then a Labrador Retriever may be right for you.

Please come out to our adoption event this weekend.  If you are looking for an addition to your family, please come out and meet our pets this weekend.  We have many available pets at the Gastonia PetSmart located at 3698 East Franklin Boulevard this Friday 6-9 pm Saturday noon to 6 p.m.
