DALLAS, N.C. - Gaston College is offering a defensive driving course.

That's the recent word from college spokeswoman Stephanie Michael. She explained that this course is for eligible individuals who have been charged with a traffic violation, or for those who want to be re-familiarized with safe driving techniques. Defensive driving uses safe driving strategies to enable motorists to deal with potential hazards in an effective and predictable manner. Students who take the defensive driving course will learn how to improve their driving skills by anticipating situations to reduce risks and by making safe, smart decisions.

Michael added that the course is offered in co-operation with the district courts in Gaston and Lincoln counties and with the North Carolina Safety and Health Council. It may be appropriate for individuals who have been charged with a traffic violation that was not in a school or work zone and did not involve the use of alcohol.

Nurses' aides have refresher course
In other news, Michael informed that the college is offering a refresher course for nurses' aides.

The Gaston College Center for Work Force Excellence is offering this for nurses' aides that are preparing for the nurse's aide competency exam for listing on the North Carolina Registry. The Nurse Aide I refresher course is a hybrid class that combines classroom sessions and Internet-based learning.

Prior to taking this course, all participants must have completed a state-approved Nursing Assistant I course or equivalent. The course is designed for those who want to be listed on the North Carolina Registry after being listed in another state, those who have allowed their N.C. listing to expire and those who want to be listed on the basis of military or nursing school education.

The classroom sessions are scheduled on the Lincoln Campus on Fridays, Nov. 9, 16, 23 and 30, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

In addition to these 12 hours in the classroom, the course includes 28 hours of Internet learning. The fee for the 40-hour course is $159.
