The first Christmas parade in our area has already happened--last Friday in Hickory.  This Saturday, Maiden kicks off its celebration of the Christmas holiday with its annual parade.

The parade is always held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  It begins at 3 PM at East Maiden Baptist Church, then rolls down Main Street to Maiden High School, so any spot on Main Street from East Maiden Road to North Main Avenue should be great for watching the parade.

Those who are familiar with and enjoy the Santa's Sac event at Lincoln Country Club may want to attend the first Santa's Sleigh at Glen Oaks Golf Club.  They plan to make this event, scheduled this year for Friday November 30th beginning at 7:30, an annual happening. Glen Oaks is partnering with the community to help the needy at Christmas. Heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served; there'll be a cash bar, DJ Darin Henley will play music for dancing.  Admission for the event is $10 or an unwrapped gift for a child. If you would like to reserve a table call Glenda Goodson at 828-244-0036.

Many already know the Varsity Blue at Maiden High School collects coats, gloves and shoes all year long and gives them out to the needy at Christmas.  They'll be doing their distribution at the school on Saturday December 1st.  This is the Robbie Gives Back effort, named for a Maiden Elementary student who died with cancer.

It's not exactly in Maiden--but they have a Maiden address: on Saturday December 8th, Santa and his elves will be skydiving at Laney's Airport, 4235  Pool View Drive.  That's off East Maiden Road and you can get there from Maiden on that road, from Lincolnton on Buffalo Shoals Road (turn right on East Maiden Road) or from Denver coming the other direction up East Maiden Road.  Simplest way there is to turn onto South Olivers Crossroad Road and then left at Joe Crouse Road.

Santa will be jumping from the plane at noon and should land in time to begin meeting with kids about 12:15.  There is no charge for admission to the event, but those attending are asked to bring a new toy (or several) for the Maiden Police Department to give to needy children this Christmas.

On Sunday December 9th, Santa will make a visit to the Maiden Recreation Department on East Klutz Street from 2 - 5 PM.

That evening beginning at dusk (about 5:00), the annual Luminary Service will be held on Bob Smyre Avenue until 8:30 PM. During this time luminary bags displaying the names of loved ones who have passed are placed throughout the cemetery. You may submit any name free of charge by calling the Maiden Recreation Center at 828-428-5022. Refreshments will be served at the corner of East Cemetery Street following the service.

Maiden High School will have its Christmas band concert on Tuesday Dec. 11th and its Christmas chorus concert on Thursday Dec. 13th, both at 7 PM at the high school.

Dec. 13th is also the date for the Merry Maiden Downtown Christmas Festival from 5:30 - 9 PM.  The center point for activities is the Gazebo just off Main Street. The Maiden High School Band will peform as well as Wayne Taylor & the Great American Country Band.  There'll be crafts for sale as well as food from various groups.  First United Methodist Church will be giving away toboggans, gloves and free popcorn, Relay for Life will have free hot chocolate, and Devine Farms will provide wagon rides.

We don't guarantee these are all the Christmas events in Maiden.  Area churches will have music and other special events.  If we learn of others in which you may be interested, we'll try to include them in our future articles about Christmas events in our area.

We have articles coming on Christmas in Stanley, Christmas in Cat Square and Christmas in Denver.
