Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party Is March 23
Gallery 27 is place to be for tea-riffic time!

LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Don’t be late! Don’t be late! It’s a very important date!

And that date is Saturday, March 23, 7-9 p.m., at Gallery 27 at 808 NC-27 West in Lincolnton. The occasion is the opening reception of the annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party exhibition, running through May 10. According to local artist and gallery owner Stacey Pilkington Smith, you and your White Rabbit won’t want to miss this.

“The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party is a Gallery 27 tradition,” Smith said this week. “The purpose of this exhibition is to challenge artists to create outside their comfort zones and provide collectors with fun and quirky original works of art. The participating artists are given mysterious prompts or weird rules to ensure each exhibit is unpredictable in nature and a one-of-a-kind event.

“This year’s challenge began with five initial artists who were invited to a secret group,” she continued. “They were then presented with this year’s theme, and each was asked to invite five additional artists. Those artist invitees were then asked to invite five more artists, creating a viral ‘rabbit hole’ effect. We are always excited to see which artists will join us on this annual artistic adventure!”

Once upon a time…
Smith noted that fairy tales offer readers a way to dive into a magical, surrealistic world.

These stories are an expression of hope and fantasy, intertwined with the idea that dreams can possibly come true. They are known for their enchantment upon the reader, thanks to the vivid descriptions of the characters and the lands they live in.

Using any medium, participants will choose a prompt from the “Once Upon a Time” prompt list to create their own stories and remind the audience why fairy tales continue to captivate, as Smith observed.

“Join us for the tea party on opening night,” she added, “and see what these artists have created. All work is available for purchase and will be sold in a silent auction. The auction will begin during the opening reception on March 23 and run until the last day of the show, May 10.
