Growing up on a tobacco and beef cattle farm in Wilson County in eastern North Carolina Dr. Crystal Mitchem developed a love for animals. Her summers were spent doing 4-H projects including showing beef cattle she helped raise.

In 1993 she received her bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University, in 1995 a master’s degree from the University of Missouri in Animal Science specializing in reproductive physiology. The faculty and advisors in Missouri hoped she would pursue her doctorate degree there, but whe wanted to come back to North Carolina.

In 1999 she graduated from NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine with honors.

She worked with several veterinary offices in Lincolnton and Shelby for several years before opening her own practice.

Then on April 4, 2011 she opened West Lincoln Veterinary Hospital just off Highway 27 near the intersection of Shoal and Cat Square roads in western Lincoln County.

At West Lincoln Veterinary Hospital, they strive to provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to help customers take the best possible care of their pets, but Dr. Mitchem told us she realizes she operates in a rural area where most people are accustomed to handling many of their animals' needs themselves--relying on vets only for help and advice when the needs go beyond their routine. "We let customers know what's available, but we don't insist they do things that are beyond their financial capabilities if their animals can be treated without going into great expense."

In celebration of their 8th anniversary this week, West Lincoln veterinary Hospital is offering 'birthday specials.' Rabies shots are $8 all week. Cat neuters are half price; microchipping is 30% off; wellness bloodwork is 20% off, and nail trims are $10. This Friday, heartworm tests are $20 and they're giving 20% off on flea, tick and heartworm preventatives. Collars and leashes, treats and chews, and shampoos and ear cleaners are 20% off.

Customers have spoken with high praise of Dr. Mitchem and her staff. From their Facebook page:

  • Thank you all so much for taking care of my sweet Bronx this weekend! Our normal vet was closed and we came to visit WL Veterinary Hospital – best decision ever! We even decided to switch vets. Bronx loves his new vet & so do I. Thank you all again for being so sweet, patient, and taking such good care of my puppy!
  • Dr. Mitchem cleaned my dogs teeth, did a great job and found that two back teeth were rotten which could have resulted in a much more costly vet bill. Prevention is key!!! Thanks to all at West Lincoln Vet for taking care of my baby girl!
  • Dr. Mitchem and everyone at West Lincoln Vet Clinic are the best ever. Chopper & Bailey are very grateful for the care you give them each time we are there!
  • Dr. Mitchem is the best ever!

West Lincoln Veterinary Hospital is located at 4393 NC Highway 27 just east of the Shoal/Cat Square Road intersection. For more information or appointments, call 704-276-1556.
