Container Gardening (Claremont)
If you love the look of lush container plantings but aren’t sure how to get started, the Catawba County Library is offering tips on creating your own. The workshop takes place at 2 PM Thursday, May 9 at the Claremont Branch Library, 3288 E. Main St. For more information call 828-465-8664.

Build Your Own Birdhouse (Hickory)
To help children learn about bird habitats, the Catawba County Library is partnering with the Home Depot for a special program on nature and ornithology. It takes place at 4 PM Thursday at the St. Stephens Branch Library, 3225 Springs Rd. NE, Hickory. At the hands-on workshop, children will learn how to build a birdhouse with adult assistance. Network After Work (Gastonia)
The Montcross Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Network After Work event Thursday at Chronicle Millworks, 116 Ledford Dr., Gastonia (just off S. New Hope Rd.). An Open House begins at 4 PM and the Network After Work is from 5:30 - 7 PM. There is no charge to attend and non-members interested in the Chamber or Chronicle Millworks are welcome.

Plant Sale (Belmont)
Holy Angels, the organization & facility that cares for children and adults with intellectual developmental disabilities and delicate medical conditions, will have a Plant Sale this Thursday & Friday (9 AM - 4:30 PM) at their location--6600 Wilkinson Blvd. in Belmont. Proceeds will be used to support their horticulture program.

The Griggs in Concert
Well-known gospel group, the Griggs, will sing at Johnny K's, 421 N. Generals Blvd., from 6:30 until 8 PM this Friday evening.

Cherryville's Movie in the Park Night
Weather permitting, Cherryville will have a Movie in the Park Night Friday evening 6 - 10 PM at the Mini Park at 219 E. Main St. The movie "Mary Poppins Returns" will be shown. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and enjoy this family event. Refreshments will be sold.

North Carolina Brewers & Music Festival (Huntersville)
If you had a great time at Lincolnton's Food, Wine & Brew Fest, you may want to attend the NC Brewers & Music Festival this Friday (beginning at 3 PM) and Saturday at 4431 Neck Road in Huntersville. It's NOT a free event. There's no beer tasting on Friday, but they'll have a Friday Night Jam. Tickets are $15 and have to be purchased by 2 PM Friday. Tickets for tasting on Saturday will cost you $50 and tickets for the music event on Saturday are $28. For more information, check the event on Facebook.


Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
Every year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers, who participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive — the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Want to help? Just leave paper or plastic bags full of non-perishable, canned food items by your mailbox, and your local postal worker will pick them up.

Lincoln County Christian Ministry, which will receive some of the food collected, needs volunteers to help sort the food as it comes in. If you'd like to volunteer to help, call Woody Saunders at 704-748-4961.

Second Saturday Breakfast
Marvin United Methodist Church at 2731 Startown Rd. will have its Second Saturday Breakfast 7 - 10 AM.

Lake Norman Riversweep & Clean Up Postponed
The Lake Norman Spring Clean Up that had been scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed for one week because of the likelihood of rain Saturday.  Keep Lincoln County Beautiful invites everyone who wants to enjoy a clean Lake Norman this Summer to help with the cleanup NEXT Saturday (May 18th) beginning at 8 AM at the Beattys Ford Recreational Area on Shipley Lane just off Unity Church Road in Denver. Boat owners should come to the boat landing there; other volunteers are also needed. For more information, call Patty Korn at 704-451-7313. 

Sound the Alarm Event (Gastonia)[postponed]
The American Red Cross & Gastonia Fire Dept. will sponsor a Sound the Alarm event this Saturday. Training begins at 9 AM at R.O.'s Bar-B-Cue, 1318 Gaston Avenue and plans are to install smoke alarms at homes in the area until 2 PM. [Because of weather, this event has been postponed until June 1st.]

Crouse Fire Dept. Spaghetti Dinner
The Ladies Auxiliary of Crouse Fire Department will hold a Spaghetti Dinner Saturday 1 - 6 PM at the Crouse Community Building, 2322 Boy Scout Road. Cost is $7 per plate and proceeds will be used for community projects. Call-in orders are welcome at 704-735-2247. Delivery will be available for five or more orders; call 703-735-2247.

Briarhoppers in Concert
The legendary Briarhoppers will be featured in concert at 11 AM Saturay at the main Gaston County Public Library, 1555 E. Garrison Blvd. in Gastonia. The concert is free and open to the public.

Pizza for History
GoodWood Pizza on N. Aspen St. in Lincolnton will donate 10% of all sales Saturday 11 AM - 8 PM to the Lincoln County Historical Association.
