NCDOT Proposes Additional Lane On US29/74 In Gastonia

NC Department of Transportation
Press Release

The NC Department of Transportation proposes to construct an additional eastbound thru lane on eastbound US29/74 (East Franklin Boulevard) in Gastonia from Cox Road/Armstrong Park Road (S.R. 2200) to just east of Lineberger Road (road into Sam's Club, etc. just before Kohl's), a distance of approximately 1.1 miles.

The improvements would increase the total number of eastbound travel lanes in this area from two to three. Some work may occur within the existing median and eastbound left-turn lanes, but westbound lanes would remain unchanged. The inclusion of pedestrian accommodations such as a paved multi-use path or sidewalk along the south side of East Franklin Boulevard is also being evaluated.

Currently, eastbound traffic must merge from three to two lanes shortly after crossing the Cox Road/Armstrong Park Road intersection. These conditions create delays in front of the Franklin Square shopping center and have likely contributed to above-average crash rates in the area.
