John Howell Memorial Service
Sergeant John Hugh Howell II was a US Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient during the Vietnam War.

As a civilian, he joined the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office as a deputy and made the rank of Sergeant.

On August 26, 1973, Sgt. Howell, then 24, was shot and killed after responding to a domestic dispute in which a man had assaulted his daughter. When Sgt. Howell arrived at the location, the man's son let him into the house; he exchanged shots with the father, who was armed with a .22 caliber rifle, and Sgt. Howell was struck in the chest and hand. He was able to make it to his patrol car and called for assistance before succumbing to his wounds.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder and assault. He was convicted of second degree murder in March 1974, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was released on May 28th, 1982. In May of 1995 he was killed when a tractor turned over on top of him.

John Howell Memorial Drive, where the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is now located, was named for Sgt. Howell, the only law enforcement officer in Lincolnton or Lincoln County ever killed in the line of duty.

This Sunday at 3 PM, a long overdue memorial service will be held to remember and honor Sgt. Howell. The event will take place on the Courtsquare in Lincolnton. Sheriff Bill Beam & others will speak. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The event was organized by Alan Hoyle.
