LINCOLNTON––It’s time once again for the annual Robinson-Lineberger Literary Competition.

That’s the word this week from Arts Council of Lincoln County spokeswoman Deanna McGinnis. The upcoming competition is the 37th annual such. It’s named for the late Flo Robinson and Robert Lineberger, both known for their patronage of local artistic endeavors.

McGinnis explained that the trustees of Robinson’s estate established this competition to memorialize her lifelong interest in poetry and prose and to encourage writers to pursue excellence in their craft. The Lineberger estate has added its support to ensure that this tradition continues to give a voice to so many members of the Lincoln County community.

McGinnis continued that for poetry entries, the rules include submitting one poem per person on any subject, in any style, using free or blank verse or rhyming. Each should be limited to 32 lines or less.

Prose entries are likewise one per person. They may be an essay or short story on any subject, limited to about 750 words.

Entries in prose and poetry must be titled, original, unpublished and must never have won a cash award before.

The competition is open to adults and also to Lincoln County School students. Only students have to be from Lincoln County. Adults may be from neighboring counties.

Each school is asked to screen its entries and submit only the best. Student entries must come through the school and not be delivered individually to the Lincoln County Schools central office or the Arts Council of Lincoln County.

Prize money will be divided between prose and poetry entrants. Winning students from all grades will receive $40, $25 and $15 respectively for first, second and third-place honors. Adults 18 years of age and older will receive $60, $40 and $25 for first, second and third place respectively.

Participants should submit two typewritten, double-spaced copies of each entry. One copy must include in the upper right-hand corner the participant’s full name (and age, if a student), address, telephone number, category (prose or poetry), age group (adult or specific school grade), e-mail address and school name. The second copy should include only the poem, essay or story, with no identification.

Student entries must be submitted through a participating school. Late entries will not be accepted. All entries must be postmarked by April 13 and mailed to:

The Arts Council of Lincoln County Literary Competition, PO Box 45, Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

An awards ceremony and reading for students will be held at the Lincoln Cultural Center, located at 403 E. Main St. in Lincolnton, April 27 at 7 p.m. An awards ceremony for adults will follow, April 30 at 6:30 p.m., in the arts council galleries, also at the LCC.
