LINCOLNTON - Lincoln County Schools’ Middle and High Schools will participate in the National Black Balloon Day on March 6 by tying a black balloon at the entry to middle and high schools. The event is coordinated by the Lincoln County Substance Use Coalition Training and Education Committee who provided the following information to Lincoln County Schools:

  • National Black Balloon Day is an international and national event that brings awareness and remembrance to overdose deaths by placing black balloons at area businesses.  Black Balloon Day is Friday, March 6, 2020.  Please help us to bring awareness to our community and honor those who have lost their loved one to an overdose by placing black balloons outside your business or organization on this day.

A message from Lincoln County Substance Use
Coalition Training and Education Committee
Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 70,200 lethal drug overdoses in 2017. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic, with 47,700+ overdose deaths related to prescription opioids and illicit opioids (heroin and illicit fentanyl). Americans are more likely to die of an opioid overdose than they are from a car accident or by guns (homicide/suicide). School Guidance Counselors and Social Workers receive information and training related to drug and alcohol use annually and are committed to educating and assisting students and/or families that are impacted by addiction in our community.
