Journey's Way Has Summer Reading Program

Thomas Lark
Staff Writer

Are your kids seeking something to do this summer?

Journey’s Way Ministries may have just the answer for you. According to founder Carson Dean, registration starts May 15 for the nine-week summer reading challenge at Journey’s Way Ministries, the nonprofit agency at 118 E. Central Ave. in downtown Mount Holly. The reading challenge is open to students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as Dean informed Friday.

“Students are invited to drop by Journey’s Way Ministries’ bookstore whenever it is open and select a free book to read,” he explained. “Record how much time you read or how many pages you read in your summer reading passport. Bring your completed passport back to the bookstore to receive your cash reward, and select another book. Students can receive one reward per week during the summer dates of June 15-Aug. 15.”

Dean continued that sponsors are being sought for the reading challenge. It’s a good project for churches, businesses, families and individuals. He added that $200 sponsors a student for the entire nine-week challenge, and $15 or more supports at least one student for one week. Each $25 Food Lion grocery gift card assists the family of a summer reading challenge student. Donors will be publicly recognized by Journey’s Way.

Dean also cited the State-enforced restrictions from which North Carolina is only just beginning to recover, with many businesses and other entities still not yet open.

“Journey’s Way is committed to launching the summer reading challenge in June,” he said. “We don’t want kids in our community to fall further behind academically, and we know that our families will have limited incomes for months to come. Still, summer should be a time of fun for kids. We want to encourage reading while also providing small cash rewards for kids to do fun stuff in the summer months, such as getting ice cream! We’re planning the summer reading challenge and assuming our bookstore will reopen by June. If not, we’ll find creative ways for the program to operate and communicate changes through our Website, social media and e-mail.”
