Blood Drives In Our Area

Wayne Howard
Staff Writer

There is an urgent need for blood donations to prevent another blood shortage as hospitals resume surgical procedures and patient treatments that were temporarily paused in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthy individuals who are feeling well are asked to make an appointment to donate.  One way is by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

In recent weeks, hospital demand for blood products has grown by 30% after sharply declining in early April amid the rapidly changing and complex public health crisis. At the same time, blood drives continue to be canceled as many businesses and community organizations remain closed. Donors are needed to make and keep scheduled appointments to help meet the current need.

The American Red Cross says as an added incentive, all those who come to give through May 31st will receive a special Red Cross t-shirt by mail, while supplies last; and all those who come to give June 1-30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift  card via email.

Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings for donors and staff. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at a drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask while at the drive, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance.

A Red Cross Bloodmobile visit is scheduled for this Thursday (May 28th) from 2 PM - 6:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 701 N. Main Street in Newton.  Another is scheduled for next Thursday (June 4th) from noon until 4:30 PM at Abernethy Laurels, 102 Leonard Ave. in Newton.

Other Catawba County Red Cross Blood Drives are scheduled June 8th 3 PM - 7:30 PM at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 9042 NC127 north in Hickory; June 12th

2:30 - 7 PM at the Hickory Masonic Lodge, 30 Catawba Boulevard; in Maiden on Thursday June 11th from 2:30 - 7 PM at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church, 1707 Mays Chapel Rd.; June 12th from 11 AM - 3:30 PM at the Agricultural Resource Center, 1175 South Brady Ave. in Newton; and June 15th from 2 - 6:30 PM at St Stephens Lutheran Church, 2259 12th Avenue in Hickory.

In Lincoln County, a Bloodmobile visit will be held at Walmart Sunday June 14th
from 11:30 AM - 4 PM.

Gaston County visits include Thursday June 11th 2 - 6:30 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 575 Separk Circle in Gastonia and Saturday June 13th from 11:30 AM - 4 PM at McKenney Chevrolet, 831 S. Main Street in Lowell.

Cleveland County Bloodmobile visits are scheduled in Grover on June 9th from 3 - 7:30 PM at the First Baptist Church, 403 Cleveland Ave.; and in Lawndale on June 15th from 2 - 6:30 PM in the Belwood Community, 1114 Belwood-Lawndale Rd.

OneBlood.Org's Big Red Bus will be holding blood drives, too. The first is this Thursday (May 28th) at the Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 S. Aspen Street in Lincolnton from 10 AM - 3 PM.

Another is scheduled for Saturday (May 30th) at Marvin United Methodist Church,
2731 Startown Road from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM.

There will also be one at West Lincoln Family Medicine, 4429 NC27 west, sponsored by Messiah United Methodist Church next Thursday (June 4th) from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM; and on Tuesday June 9th at Atrium Health-Lincoln, 433 McAlister Rd. from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM.

Yet another agency that collects and distributes blood, The Blood Connection, will hold a blood drive at First Baptist Church, 201 Robin Rd. in Lincolnton, next Thursday (June 4th) from 2 - 7 PM.  All donors will receive a $10 Visa card.

Another Blood Connection drive will be held June 12th from 11 AM - 4 PM at Eastridge Mall in Gastonia.
