Matira Schwab is among the top students in East Lincoln High School’s class of 2021.
Schwab, a transplant to our state, is the daughter of Bert and Jill Schwab. She has a twin sister, Alexandra, and a younger sister, Sophia.
“I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas,” she told us. “My family and I moved to North Carolina right before my freshman year of high school.”
Matira said her favorite subjects were statistics and calculus, both at the advanced-placement level and taught respectively by the husband-and-wife team of Jason and Sarah Dragoon.
“Mrs. Dragoon is incredibly sweet and an excellent teacher,” said Schwab. “I had her for about two years’ worth of math classes. Mr. Dragoon is another one of my favorite teachers. He was my soccer coach for four years, as well as a father figure for my sister and me.”
She continued that amongst her favorite East Lincoln memories are soccer and football games. This includes her own team’s soccer practices. She also lauded friend Brayden Davis (see separate Lincoln Herald article) and his efforts with the East Lincoln Trail Conservancy Club to put a walking trail behind the school. Schwab also attended the club’s meetings.
Come August, Schwab will be off to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. Afterward, she plans to attend Columbia University in New York City, transferring through Williams and Mary’s engineering program. She plans to major in mechanical engineering and to minor in statistics. She hopes to become a mechanical engineer, a statistician or an architect.
A decade hence, Schwab said she hopes to be “fresh out of graduate school and working hard to make it in the world.”
To her fellow members of the class of ’21, Schwab offered some words of wisdom.
“Do not be afraid of making mistakes,” she said. “So many of us are held back by this fear of being wrong, when instead we should use this as a learning opportunity––a steppingstone that will lead us to the path of success.”
