WSGE Spring Fundraiser, May 1-14
Donations help keep 91.7 going

Lincoln Herald Staff

It’s time once again for WSGE’s annual spring fundraising drive.

Gaston College’s radio station, located at 91.7 on the left of your FM dial, this year has the theme of “Play It Forward” for its fund drive, according to college spokeswoman Linda Vespa. She said Thursday that the award-winning station is accepting donations and pledges before the official kick-off, May 1. The fundraiser proper runs through May 14. The station needs to raise $70,000 to support operation expenses and equipment upgrades, according to station manager Cathis Hall.

“WSGE 91.7-FM has been a vital part of our community for more than 40 years,” said Hall. “Our eclectic mix of your favorite music—beach and shag, blues, gospel, rock and rhythm-and-blues or classic soul—is just one of the reasons for our loyal following.

“But we’re about more than just great music,” she added. “As an NPR-affiliated station, we also offer news and public affairs shows. Two new sports programs, ‘The Thundering Rhinos Sports Review’ and ‘From the Horn,’ that highlight the new Gaston College Rhinos teams, were recently added thanks to the financial support of our listeners and sponsors. During Carolina Music Month, we showcased local independent artists with ‘91 Seconds of Fame,’ and Black History Month and Women’s History Month each featured two special four-part series focused on the significant challenges faced by area youth and women.”

Money raised through the spring fund drive will enable the station to continue to “Play It Forward” with programming that is entertaining, informative and enlightening. To support WSGE and to enter your name for participation in incentive prize drawings, see the Website at
