This year's theme: "music that matters"
WSGE disc jockey John Barkley of Lincolnton has volunteered at the station for more than a quarter-century. That’s the theme for this year’s spring fundraising drive, running through May 11, for Gaston College radio station WSGE 91.7-FM. Gaston College spokeswoman Stephanie Michael Pickett said the theme for this year’s spring fundraising drive, running through May 11th, for Gaston College radio station WSGE 91.7-FM is "it's the music that matters."  The station is focused on playing genres and performers not commonly heard on commercial broadcast stations.

Also sharing her thoughts was station manager Cathis Hall.

“WSGE listeners rave about the diverse mix of music that is played on the station and truly appreciate our emphasis on supporting Carolinas musicians,” said Hall.

The award-winning station is currently accepting donations. The $60,000 goal will help defray operating costs (including those associated with being an affiliate of NPR) and equipment upgrades.

WSGE has been recognized as one of the best radio stations in the region for Carolina beach music. The station has won the Carolina Beach Music Award as FM Station of the Year six times, including in 2011 and annually, 2015-19.

Among the station’s disc jockeys is John Barkley, also known as “Johnny B” to his listeners. A station volunteer for more than 25 years, Barkley was awarded the prestigious honor of induction into the Carolina Beach Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2020. He’ll be playing music during the spring fund drive, along with D.J.’s David Dodd, Sandy Hamilton, Phil Kistler, Ron Ramsey, Greg Ross, Jim Shafer, Angela Skidmore, Scott Smith, Larry Strout, Curtis Treece and Lamar Walker.  Listen Fridays, 6 p.m.-midnight, Saturday, midnight -7 p.m. and Sunday, noon-midnight.
The station is also a proud community partner that supports many activities. It was recently the media sponsor for the “Scouting for Food Drive” held by the Cub Scouts of Pack 28 and Boy Scouts of Troops 28 and 1028. The troops collected canned food and non-perishable items for Dallas Christian Ministries and families in need.
