Lincoln County Commissioners will hold a special joint meeting with the Lincolnton City Council Thursday afternoon (July 22nd) at 2:00 pm at the Lincoln County Administration Office, 353 N. Generals Blvd. Representatives from the UNC School of Government will make a presentation about the possibilities for reuse of the current Lincoln County courthouse when the new courthouse near the Lincoln County Health Dept. is occupied.
Numerous sessions were held by a committee charged with coming up with ideas for repurposing the courthouse. One of the possibilities is a public-private development of the building, possibly including townhouses on one floor, one or more restaurants on another, and other small shops. That particular idea received the most discussion at a recent Commissioners meeting, but no decision on the future use of the old courthouse has been made. Thursday's meeting will give Commissioners and the City Council an opportunity to hear from the School of Government about a possible study that could lead to a plan for repurposing the building.
If the Commissioners and City Council agree, they would share the cost of the study. In addition to providing a plan, the School of Government would also seek possible investors who might be interested in the project.
While this is NOT a public hearing and no input from the public will be heard, it is an open meeting, and anyone interested is welcome to attend and hear the discussion.
