LINCOLNTON, N.C. – The annual KREWE Fun Fest at the historic Woodside Plantation on Highway 182 West in Lincolnton was held this past Saturday, September 24.

Complete with tours of the historic home owned by Rick Ramseur, food, activities for the kids, music with Back In Time, The Group, and DJ Randy Davis, and of course Rick’s Magic Act to the delight of young and old alike - the event this year didn’t charge admission.

They hoped for a large crowd, and lots of donations for the YMCAs Summer Camp Program. Last year the Summer Camp averaged a hundred campers per week with most of them kids who would not have been able to attend without receiving financial assistance like that provided by KREWE. Camp activities included field trips, cooking lessons, and swimming lessons.

The annual event began in 2003 as a Lincolnton High School reunion and quickly turned into an annual fundraiser thanks to the efforts of Keith Turner who first suggested that money be raised to help support the Lincoln County Family YMCA's Summer Camp Scholarship Program.

The word "KREWE" is a New Orleans term associated with Mardi Gras that describes a festival and the people who participant in it. When Larry Dellinger, Harry Costner, and Rick Ramseur from the Lincolnton High School class of 1962 formed KREWE with Keith Turner from the class of 1960, they decided it was an appropriate name for their efforts. Turner died the next year and the festival has been staged each year since in his memory.

The first KREWE event raised $10,000; others have raised as much as $15,000. Over the years, attendance at KREWE has dwindled as other activities have become competitors for an audience.

Final figures were not available as to how much was contributed on Saturday. Be sure to put this event on your calendar for next year – you will not be disappointed and a lot of kids will be able to go to Summer Camp.
