Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Unity Awards.
According to Gaston Together Executive Director Donna Lockett, the awards ceremony will be held Jan. 18, co-inciding with the observance of the national holiday in memory of the slain civil rights leader. The event will be presented by the Gaston Clergy and Citizens Coalition, an initiative of Gaston Together. Further details are pending, subject to State-mandated virus-related restrictions. More information is slated to follow later.
The MLK Unity Awards were created in 2004. The award recognizes current or former Gaston County citizens who have performed exemplary community service to help build bridges of unity across lines of race, class, gender, faith and/or among municipalities within the county. Names of the honorees are engraved on the MLK Monument located at the MLK Plaza in Gastonia.
Past winners include such notable community members as former state senator Marshall Rauch, N. A. Smith, Mildred Sadler, the 1964 Gastonia Human Relations Committee, Rev. Houston Matthews, Danny Jackson, Sam Shoukry and Richard and Lucy Penegar.
The Gaston Clergy and Citizens Coalition is a countywide association of many local ministers. It was formed by Gaston Together in the late 1990’s. It meets on the second Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. in the family life center of the First United Methodist Church of Gastonia. Due to said restrictions, the group is these days meeting via computer screen, using an Internet-based format.
