Lincolnton Celebrates Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, the day on which slaves in Texas finally got the word that the Civil War was over, the Confederacy had lost, and the 13th Amendment had outlawed slavery, was celebrated in Lincolnton on Saturday (June 18th).

Juneteenth Celebration
Juneteenth, now a national holiday, will be celebrated this weekend and Monday across America.  The actual day is June 19th--the day on which in 1865, a Union general arrived at Galveston, Texas, to announce that all slaves were now free.

There are two dates on the North Carolina state flag.  One of those is the date of the legendary Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the name given to a document supposedly produced on May 20, 1775.  Historians now believe it may be a so-called 'urban legend,' but real or not, it's part of our history.
