The tradition continued at Salem Industries on Thursday as the workers there (officially known as consumers) participated in a 4th of July celebration that was started as a United Way project back in 2006.
Cathy Davis, then United Way Director and Ed Campbell organized the first event and each year, some business or industry has stepped up to make it possible again. This year, Debbie Sipe and the folks at First Citizens Bank bankrolled (pun intended) the project.
Members of the United Way Teen Board and supervisor Lyndsey Leatherman prepared and served the hot dogs and other food and beverages. DJ Darin Henley provided the music and everyone had a great time.
For those who may not be familiar, Salem Industries is a United Way agency, a part of Gaston Skills, a private non-profit organization established in 1964 to serve adults who are challenged in Gaston, Lincoln and the eastern portion of Cleveland counties.
At Salem Industries, the workers, called consumers, improve their life skills and participate in real work providing items that are used by several area industries. Far from just an adult daycare program, it's a way to provide both training and companionship while helping to promote a sense of self-worth.
United Way Director Kathy Vinzant said the event held every July is something the people at Salem Industries really enjoy and expressed her gratitude to all those who helped make it possible, especially First Citizens Bank.
