Ella May Wiggins To Be Commemorated Sept. 14
Sept. 14 will mark the 90th anniversary of the murder of Ella May Wiggins. A famous labor organizer, mill worker and key figure in Gastonia’s Loray Mill Strike of 1929, Wiggins––known by all who knew her simply as Ella May––was gunned down by thugs commonly believed to have been hired by a mill owner or owners. It was an event that reverberated down through local, regional and national history for generations.

United Way of Lincoln County is hosting their annual Day of Action on Thursday, August 22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A community garden will be installed at the Oaklawn Community Center and will work on landscape projects at Hesed House of Hope. United Way is still seeking additional volunteers to support the Day of Action projects.

At 3 p.m. on June 28 the Lincoln County Health Director cancelled the Swimming Advisory issued on June 26  for an unnamed cove in Lake Norman at 8025 Island View Court, Denver, NC, in the Westport Subdivision. This decision to cancel the Advisory is based on water sample testing conducted by Lincoln County Public Works.
