Joe Franklin Whitener
June 5, 1935 - March 22, 2019

MAIDEN, N.C. - Joe Franklin Whitener, age 83 of Maiden passed away Friday, March 22, 2019 at his residence.

Born June 5, 1935 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Walter Clyde and Effie Viola McCray Whitener. Joe was a lifelong member of Mays Chapel UMC where he served on several committees and taught Sunday school. He retired from Ethan Allen in Maiden. In addition to his parents, brother, Allen Whitener preceded him in death.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 62 years Nancy Whitener of the home; two daughters Gena Keener and husband Nick of Belmont, Jill Mauser and husband Gene of Newton; son Kevin Whitener and wife Lisa of Lincolnton; two brothers Harold Whitener of Lincolnton, C.W. Whitener of Maiden; two sisters Barbara Rogers of Lincolnton, Martha Gilbert of Maiden; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 3 p.m. at Mays Chapel UMC in Maiden with Pastor Jason Guyer officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the church.
