Sherrill Jean Helms Lingle Poarch, 81, went to be with her Savior on June 4, 2019.
"One of a Kind", "Bright light", "A Gem", "Ray of Sunshine"...these are the words that have been used to describe Sherrill and they couldn't be more true, she lived a life of love and will be greatly missed.
Daughter of the late Joseph M. and Chattie Snyder Helms; born in Union County on September 23, 1937. She attended Richardson Beauty College in 1955 for her license in cosmetology and then began her over 50 year career. Sherrill was the quintessential hairdresser; she never met a stranger and could chat for hours! She gave many years of service at salons; Sherlo's (short for Sherrill and Lois) and Curls and Swirls in Charlotte and lastly at New Impressions in Stanley. Talented at her craft with a personality to match; she turned coworkers and clients into lifelong friends in the process.
In 1975, she married the love of her life Ned Poarch and they later settled in Stanley, N.C. where they made a home over the last 40 plus years. It was here she was able to put her joy of gardening to use with her gorgeous flower gardens and she took such pride in keeping their home beautifully decorated. This is also the place where she hosted numerous family reunions with fishing in the pond and badminton in the front yard for all the kids. She was an excellent cook and was well known in the family for her coconut cake and sweet potato casserole at special occasions.
Sherrill was a natural born caretaker, she "mothered" and loved all her siblings, her family by marriage and nieces and nephews as her own; and continued that right into the next generation of "greats". This love also carried over to many special friends and neighbors; helping and caring for others was a delight to her. Additionally, she was an animal lover treating her sweet pets just like babies; even rescuing stray animals including baby ducks one summer. She truly had a heart of gold.
Though her family and friends will miss her dearly we know as a Christian woman she has been reunited with her precious daughter Tonya, her beloved husband Ned and her family and friends that have gone before her. We will remember her with joy in our hearts and a smile on our face just as she taught us.
She was preceded in death by her precious infant daughter Tonya Jean Lingle; her beloved husband L. Ned Poarch; brothers, Edward and James (Jimmy); sisters, Dorothy (Dot) Wilson, Mary (Josie) Ferrell; Elizabeth (Lib) Rion and niece Crystal Winchester.
She is survived by brother William Helms (Sherri); step-daughter Pamela Walker; step-grandson Scott Walker (Marsha); step-great-grandchildren Bailey and Blake; nieces; Teresa Buchanan (Buck), Lisa Maulden (Todd); Lynn Stephens; Marjorie Hinson (Mark); Sarah Meade (Fred); nephews; Eddie Wilson, Mike Wilson, Joseph Helms (Jennifer) and many dearly loved great nieces and nephews; also cherished friend Frank Agee and so many others.
