Tanya Hoyle Matthews
September 17, 1965 - June 5, 2020

Tanya Hoyle Matthews triumphantly finished her course in faith in the early morning hours of June 5, 2020.

A creative and loving spirit, Tanya wanted people to be as happy and joyful as she was. Whether she was baking treats for friends, dressing up for special classroom events, or simply sitting on a porch swing, she was always humorous and spreading laughter. A retired elementary school teacher and teacher of the year at Mountain View Elementary in Burke County, she saw the world through the eyes of children, full of wonder, play and possibilities. Tanya bravely battled brain tumors with great dignity and courage for nearly twenty-five years. Never bitter or complaining, she inspired others. She changed the world by reaching one child at a time. The spouse of a minister, she never fit the stereotype of a "preacher's wife." She enjoyed playing handbells and was usually the last one to sit down before the start of the worship. (Often with a regal wave as she took her seat.) As a mother, she instilled in her daughter the belief that she should aspire to any dream, to dance, to inspire and to love deeply. She passed along the family value to protect the least of God's children. An untold number of people will ache, missing the light of her sweet sweet spirit.

Tanya was preceded in death by her father Richard "Dickie" Hoyle.

Surviving are her husband, Tony Matthews of Lincolnton; daughter, Suzanne and son-in-law Seth Atkins of Lincolnton; mother, Valeria Hoyle of Vale; sister, Heidi Houser and husband Mike of Vale, sister Twila Hoyle of New Orleans; brother Jesse Hoyle of Vale. Tanya also considered many others, including, her in-laws and cherished friends as true members of her family.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Vale, NC with the Rev. Philip Cole officiating.

Memorials may be made to her home church and place of burial. Macedonia UMC, C/O Claude Bivens, 3240 Lynn Mountain Road, Vale, NC 28168.

A guest register is available at www.stameytysingerfuneralhome.com.

Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Fallston, N.C. is serving the Matthews family.
