NEWTON, N.C. - Rev. William Elmer (Bill) Smith, 90, of Newton, passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 with his daughter by his side at Trinity Village in Hickory.
He was born September 16, 1931 in Catawba County to the late Frank Smith and Zora Lee Smith. Bill was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory and served as an ordained Lutheran minister, receiving his Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. During Rev. Smith’s long ministry he served the following congregations in North Carolina: Mt. Zion-New Bethel, Richfield, 1960-62; Bethany, Boone-Holy Trinity, Deep Gap, 1962-64; Salem-St. Luke, Lincoln County, 1964-66; St. Mark, Cherryville, 1966-70, 1973-76; Good Shepherd, Hickory, 1971-73; St. Stephen, Gold Hill, 1976-83; Messiah, Burlington, 1983-84; and retired 1985 in Crouse, N.C. His favorite quote was “Leave love in your path.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Ruby L. Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory is his daughter Naia D. Smith of Conover; son Terry R. Smith of Rapid City, S.D.; grandsons David Wright and Michael Wright; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at a later date.
