Press Release

HICKORY, N.C. – Lenoir-Rhyne University will celebrate International Education Week with featured speaker Crystal Dreisbach Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in Grace Chapel.

Dreisbach’s presentation titled, “We Must Care for the World,” will address innovation, the GreenToGo reusable takeout container service, and how she came to find and develop her gifts as an activist.

Dreisbach is the executive director of Don’t Waste Durham, a nonprofit in Durham, North Carolina, established in 2013. Its focus is to reduce the amount of trash produced in the community by preventing it in the first place. Dreisbach also invented GreenToGo, a reusable takeout container service which operates in Durham’s restaurants that has been recognized by Fast Company as among the 50 most promising innovations in the country. GreenToGo’s mission is to disrupt the take-and-trash status quo, and to inspire and proliferate the circular economy everywhere.

Driesbach has a master’s degree in public health and is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, the mother of two small boys, and a long-distance runner.

International Education Week is a federal initiative to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and encourage future leaders to study, learn, and exchange experiences. LR will host events that promote international education and facilitate exchange activities during this national celebration. This year’s theme is “Think Global, Act Local.”

The event is free and open to public. For more information, contact Laura Dobson, Ph.D., director of the William and Robert Shuford Center for International Education, at laura.dobson@lr.edu or by calling 828.328.7028.
