HICKORY, N.C. – Registration is open for Lenoir-Rhyne University’s seventh annual Summer Youth Music Camps. The camps provide middle school and high school students an opportunity to enhance their musical talents through instruction by professional clinicians.

This year’s band camp is scheduled from Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12, in the Mauney Music Building on the campus of LR. New to the offerings this year is a choral camp, also for middle school and high school students. Its inaugural week will be held June 24 to June 28, 2019 in conjunction with the Hickory Choral Society Choral Summer Camp for rising fourth to sixth graders.

The camps retain a day camp option with instruction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and supervised early drop-off in the morning, beginning at 8 a.m., and afternoon recreational time until 5:30 p.m. The day camp tuition of $200 includes instruction, five lunches in the LR dining hall, and a camp T-shirt.

Residential campers will arrive on the Sunday evening preceding camp. (June 23 for choral; July 7 for band). The cost for residential campers is $430, which includes overnight supervised housing, evening social activities or entertainment, 14 meals in the LR dining hall, and a camp T-shirt.

“Our band camp increases in popularity every year and we are so excited to extend our offering this year to include a choral camp,” said Christopher Nigrelli, professor of music at LR and camp director. “The purpose of the camp is to help students develop their skills as young musicians in an engaged and fun learning environment.”

Leading the camps alongside Nigrelli is Ryan Luhrs, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, Ted Neely, music education and marching band staff, and Neil Underwood, associate director of bands and director of the Spirit of Lenoir-Rhyne Marching Band.

LR’s summer camp programs also feature instruction by experienced, award-winning public school music educators. Past band instructors have included Neely, Underwood, and Col. Jeffrey Warner, retired after a career leading bands in the United States Air Force, as well as Andrew Blair, Jenny Lanier, Jerry Lowe, Leah Massey, Tammy Reyes, and Haskew Smith.

To register for either LR camp, visit or contact Nigrelli at or Luhrs at Rising fourth through sixth graders interested in the choral camp at Hickory Choral Society can call 828.322.2210.
