I-40 Closed Monday Afternoon By Rockslide

NC Department of Transportation
Press Release

Heavy rains over the weekend contributed to a small rockslide that closed all lanes of I-40 west in Haywood County near the North Carolina-Tennessee state line Monday afternoon, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The closure is at Exit 7, Cold Springs Creek Road. That's about a half mile from a large rockslide that kept part of the interstate lanes closed from February until last month.

At this time, NCDOT said the road will be closed indefinitely, but hoped to have it cleared by later Monday evening.

Westbound traffic was stopped without moving for five hours after the slide.

UPDATE: One lane was reopened late Monday afternoon; NCDOT officials were to visit the location Tuesday to determine when the other lane might be reopened after all the rocks are removed.
