Moravian Lovefeast At First United Methodist Church

Sunday night, December 16, First United Methodist Church in Lincolnton along with their pastor Reverend David A. Wyant, held its annual Christmas Moravian Lovefeast.

The word Moravian comes from the oldest Protestant denomination The Moravian Church. The denomination originated during the beginnings of the reformation and was formally organized in 1457. The Moravians began a practice of meeting and breaking bread together to signify their union fellowship and love.

In 1727 the denomination established a custom of celebrating special occasions by sharing a simple meal of sweet bread and coffee and the service became known as a Lovefeast.

On Christmas Eve the denomination held a special Lovefeast for children that included a candlelight service to symbolize the Birth of Christ. First Methodist in Lincolnton does that at its love feast by serving coffee and Moravian bread and includes a candlelight service.

The first Lovefeasts in America were held in Savannah Georgia in 1735. John Wesley was invited to share in 1737, and it began and ended with thanksgiving and prayer. As a result of this experience Lovefeasts became an important part of early Methodism.

Here in Lincolnton a traditional part of the service includes the singing of hymns followed by a brass and reed band performance at the end of the service.
