National Day Of Prayer

Wayne Howard

As most are well aware, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance established in public law in 1952 and observed on the First Thursday in May since 1988. With the unprecedented challenges that our nation is facing today due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic shutdown, it is more important than ever.

This year’s theme, “Pray God’s Glory Across the Earth”, is based on Habakkuk 2:14, and reminds us that this promise, “for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” is for us today. National Day of Prayer (NDP) Task Force President, Kathy Branzell, put it this way, “Unprecedented times call for unprecedented prayer! This year's ‘virtual’ National Day of Prayer Observance may have more prayer – and more ‘pray-ers’ than ever before!”

In previous years, people gathered across the nation in over 60,000 local community events to pray together for America. In recent years, Sally's YMCA has hosted a National Day of Prayer breakfast.

For reasons of public health, they did not have a community breakfast this year; but a 'virtual' breakfast was held Thursday morning.  Joe Kovalcheck, the Executive Director of the Lincoln County Family YMCA in Lincolnton and Sally's Y in Denver, emailed the following:

I hope you are all off to a great start to your day...I know I am! I was blessed to watch the Association's Virtual Prayer Breakfast this morning. If you missed it, don't worry as you can watch it any time at the YMCA of Greater Charlotte's Facebook page.
Our own local Virtual Prayer Breakfast was carried live on both the Sally's YMCA and Lincoln County YMCA Facebook pages. I am so thankful to Pastors Kenny Mills, Joey Williams, and Victor Nicholson for leading our program, Dr. Todd Hamilton for sponsoring our virtual breakfast, and to our amazing Christian Emphasis Committees that made this idea a reality. I am so blessed and thankful for each and every one of you! We invite you to join us in the faith and fellowship and watch the local video by clicking HERE and of course like, comment, and share to help us reach more people.
Later today at 3 pm, we will also post a standalone version of the Lord's Prayer Video on our Facebook pages. Thank you to all who sent in videos!
You can also view these videos without Facebook at Thanks again and I hope you all have day full of faith and prayer!

3 - LC Board Elections - Poll Workers

This past Sunday afternoon (May 3rd), several people participated in a prayer observance on the Courtsquare.  A similar gathering limiting groups to no more than 10 but possibly involving several of those groups was planned for noon Thursday.
