Mt. Zion Baptist's Christmas Drama Postponed
Moved to Dec. 23, due to anticipated wintry mix

CHERRYVILLE, N.C.––They say that holy night in Bethlehem some 2,000 years ago also had snow.

And it would appear the same type of inclement weather is headed our way this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, our area could see a wintry mix, whilst of course the mountainous areas of Ashe, Watauga, Buncombe and other such western counties may well be in for a wallop of snowfall.

To that end, Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cherryville has opted to go ahead and use its rain date for its annual Nativity drama. According to church spokeswoman Carla Canipe, the Dec. 9 performance has been moved to Dec. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the church’s memorial park. It’s a live event, celebrating the birth of Christ.

“The church has made the decision, based on the weather forecast, to cancel,” she said Wednesday.

But regardless of the time, this is an event you won’t want to miss, as Canipe observed.

“Please come and enjoy this wonderful message of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!” she said. “Light refreshments will be served in the dining hall afterwards.”

The church’s pastor, Rev. Wayne Key, said he was looking forward to the event.

“We will have live animals,” said Key. “Our church members will be playing the characters in the Christmas Story. There will be lots of music by our choir and others.”

And in related news, she said the church’s adult choir would present its Christmas cantata, Come and See, Go and Tell, also Dec. 23, at 10 a.m. The church’s children will also present their play.

“Please come,” Canipe encouraged the members of the local public, “and bring your family and friends!”

And she continued that on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 at 11 p.m., the church will have its candlelight communion service.

“We would love to have you come and worship with us,” she said, “as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

The church is located at 112 Mt. Zion Church Road in Cherryville’s 28201 ZIP code. To learn more, call the church at (704) 435-9636.
