The resurrection of Jesus is a personal thing for those of us who believe. We are comforted by the idea that physical death is nothing to fear. 2 Corinthians 5:1 says “For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Old age, disease, accidents and natural disasters do not threaten our peace. If today is our last day on earth, we know we will be with Him.
The resurrection of Jesus is a personal thing because we know that by his sacrificial death on the cross, he has paid the spiritual price for our sin and God has forgiven us. While we walk the earth, the consequences of our sin may follow us, and people may not forgive us, but God has forgiven us through Jesus. The mistakes we made when we were young, the poor choices we have made as adults, those things we have done that we deeply regret, the sin we can’t even forgive ourselves for could be like failing grades written in permanent ink on our spiritual report card but the blood of Jesus covers us with his righteousness and we are forgiven in Him. It’s a personal thing to be free from the guilt and shame of our sin.
Believers know that we are not alone in life. Jesus promised us that he would be with us as we walk this broken road in John 14:15-18 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
The resurrection is a personal thing, and the freedom of life in Christ today is truly good news in this lost and broken world.
