And Williams continued that Pisgah United Methodist Church is having a mobile food distribution this Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.
In other news, she added that normally, the U.S. Post Office’s “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive would take place this weekend. But it, too, is one of countless events cancelled under said restrictions.
“We will miss this great food drive,” said Williams. “Currently, our biggest needs are canned beans, crackers and any kind of ‘Chef Boyardee’ pastas. The ‘thank-you’ notes we are getting humble us. We feel the love that everyone is sending. Thank you for that! Continue to watch our Website and Facebook page for updates. Help us by sharing our information so those in need can receive help. Continue to pray for the ministry, clients, volunteers and staffers.”
Of America’s roughly 328.2 million inhabitants, some 33 million are now without work, thanks to crippling virus-related restrictions imposed by authorities over the past two months. Not quite half that number of unemployed people arose over the past month alone, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That figure of 33 million jobless people is more than double the rate of the Great Depression at its worst in 1933, when the American population was one-third its present size, according to finance professor Dr. Sanjay Rajagopal of Western Carolina University. The statistics are very sobering, as Rajagopal told The Herald last week.
“These are not the numbers for a recession,” he said, emphasizing, “These numbers are consistent with a depression.”
