Your Heart's Desire

Rev. Susan Smith
Guest Columnist

God is always trying to teach us something. Your spiritual eyes can help you see Him in everyday life, and you never know when a “God moment” will appear to inspire your spiritual journey along the path of Christ.

Recently I was with my grandsons and we decided to clean out the fountain in my front yard because over time the water had become very dirty and dark from dirt, grass clippings and leaves that had fallen in to it. We took pots and pans to empty it and began pouring the water on the ground around it. Pretty soon we got to the muck in the bottom and we began scooping it out with our hands. They were delighted when we started finding the pennies they had thrown in with their wishes.

We were amazed that every handful of mud was full of pennies as well as nickels and quarters too. I knew I had never given the boys nickels and quarters to throw in the fountain and the incredible number of pennies was way beyond anything that we had done. Soon I realized that most of these coins were not ours. Where did they come from? People are always walking by my house and I realized that my little fountain had become the neighborhood wishing well. I had a “God moment” when I saw I was holding the hopes and dreams of my neighbors in my hand. What had they wished for? Did their dreams come true? At that moment God showed me the deep longing in humanity and how it must feel to hear the prayers of His people.

We all have hopes and dreams. Many of us have thrown pennies in a wishing well, hoping to receive what we asked for, but is this the way to get God to answer our prayers? What is the lesson of a wishing well? It begins with our heart’s desire.

Psalm 37:3-4
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

We know that life is a struggle full of pain and sorrow, so how can we delight ourselves in the Lord? This passage says we should look for our happiness in our relationship with God rather than in people, places, and things. When we have a spiritual attitude, we can find our happiness in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in our life. These fruits of the spirit are delicious no matter what the day brings. When we live as spiritual people, God will give us holy motives for our heart’s desire, and our wishes will be in line with His will.

1 John 5:14-15
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

Wishing wells are fun, but many requests lay on the bottom of the fountain and never come to pass. God is the one who can answer our prayers and give us our hearts desire when what we are asking for is in His will.
