Faith Of Our Fathers

Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword.
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!

Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto Thee;
And through the truth that comes from God
We all shall then be truly free.

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach Thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.

Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to Thee till death.

Rev. Phillip Campbell, Minister
Of Music & Worship

The great hymn "Faith of Our Fathers" was written by Frederick W. Faber in 1849. American heroes who went before us had great faith in almighty God. Let us be reminded that many of them paid inordinate personal prices as they preserved their Christian heritage and traditions.

Keep in mind, also, that the foundational stronghold to which our forefathers would cling was founded in the Bible, and it was to them as dear as life itself. Much more could be told about those who went before us and the persecutions they endured during their quest for a “new land,” where they could enjoy Christian freedom.

The faith of our fathers, referred to in this hymn, is their abundant trust in a loving Heavenly Father. They had learned about Him in the scriptures - lessons that presently guide our feet each day and which make it easier to fall asleep at night.

Writing hymns was the life’s work and mission of Fredrick W. Faber. He wrote songs that he thought would be helpful to his fellow Christians. He wrote approximately 150 such hymns before his death. “Faith of Our Fathers” was one of his crowning achievements.

My dad, Joseph A. Campbell, was one of those men who were faithful to God, his family and the people he served. He was called into the ministry as a young father with five children. As a young boy, I watched him drive away each Monday after serving his church all weekend to attend seminary 179 miles away. While he was away from Monday morning until Thursday evening, my mom stayed at home to take care of all five children (which was miraculous in itself--and she did not have a driver’s license.

I was truly amazed at his perseverance and strength to overcome the obstacles while serving a local church and his continuous preparation to serve the people of God. What an example I was given from such a devout father and Christian leader. I am so fortunate and humbled to have been given such a legacy. My prayer is that we use our opportunities to serve and love one another in the name of Christ.
