Seeking God

Dr. Stanley Spence, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Lincolnton, N.C.

It’s easy to stand in a crowd and cast the first stone at disruptors but what if you are about to throw that stone at God’s servant. The logical thing to say is certainly if this is God’s servant I would recognize it. However, if we don’t recognize God as the sender we may likely destroy the very one God sent to put us on the right path. If we can make mistakes as people of faith, how much more likely the people who are motivated by sin might make a mistake regarding from whom you come. You may come as an instrument of God’s plan into someone’s life; and yet, be perceived as a threat because they don’t understand what God is doing for them in their lives. Let’s face it, God changes lives and so do His servants.

God-consciousness is a diminishing pursuit. Fewer and fewer seek God though more and more may claim to know Him. They sing about Him, but expect other leader types to seek Him and inform them. God wants to know you. Really, He does!!! And He wants you to know Him!!! The distractions of life attract our attention and distract our loyalties from God. This is brought to you by cultural and spiritual forces we know too little about. How can we resist temptations to shallow thinking when it serves us to live in denial of the truth. When Cain killed Abel he didn’t consider himself to be the keeper of his brother. Abel was just in the way. Just what is the truth you might wonder and how deeply should I think about this matter?

The truth is we seek God much less than we think we do. Less prayer, less Bible study, less fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) mark the lives we live today by the mere influence of society. What are we doing to correct this problem? We must seek the Lord first. What happens when we don’t want to seek Him? Self-imposed deniability is no excuse before God. That’s the whole point. We can’t stand before God and say, “we didn’t know”. There are a lot of things we don’t know but we know enough to take another step in faith. We can take another step if we will. But most of all we should consider that God will know accurately whether we have been honest or not with ourselves and Him when the day of our resurrection comes.

The next truth is, don’t expect those living outside God’s plan to recognize you even if you come with the best of intentions. It’s almost become a common understanding they are blinded by human pride in seeing the truth. You be faithful no matter the treatment of others. Stay steady, faithful, and immovable in your forward relationship progress with the Lord. You’ll be glad you did.
