LINCOLNTON––Christian Ministry of Lincoln County is gearing up now for its annual Christmas efforts.
According to executive director Mitzi Williams, donations are now being accepted. Last year, the group raised some $130,000. This year’s goal is $50,000, though of course exceeding that only helps. Monies raised benefit local needy families at Christmas and help the ministry to continue its worthy mission throughout the year. Williams added that this year’s Christmas give-out day is Dec. 23 at the ministry’s downtown offices.
“It’s when wheelbarrows of food are given to families and new toys are given to children for Christmas,” she explained.
Closer on the horizon, the county’s retired school principals will be co-ordinating a food drive next month. Beginning every Nov. 1, local schools start collecting many tons of food for the ministry, as Williams informed. To learn more, send your e-mail queries to Ricky Detter at email@example.com.
Also, from Nov. 1 and on into December, Christian Ministry’s member churches will be asked to pick specifically listed food items. Williams said they’ll be asked to concentrate on collecting as much as they can.
And Williams added that likewise starting in November, Christmas angel trees (an annual fundraising and toy-collecting effort) will begin popping up around Lincolnton.
“They are in your churches, stores and the banks,” she continued. “If you want to have an angel tree, just call us, and we will get you as many angels as you want! Maybe you don’t want to do an angel tree but want to collect toys, have a toy drive or have a toy party. After enough toys have come in, the bagging starts. Volunteers will start gathering toys for each child and get them ready to be given out.”
Located at 207 S. Poplar St. in Lincolnton, Christian Ministry is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Call (704) 732-0383 to learn more.
