A Day Time Dream

Dr. Vince Hefner, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC

Maybe it has something to do with my diet, or it could be my strange sleeping habits, and it is possible that the activities of any given day contribute to my numerous dreams that I have every night. Whatever the reason, I dream almost every night, and when I wake up each morning, I can remember parts, if not all of my dreams. Most of my dreams have to do with normal, everyday events that are experienced by all people.

Since I have so many different types of dreams, I can place them in certain categories. I have my “Store Dreams” where I am looking for an item in a store and I can’t find it. Sometimes, my dreams place me behind the cash register with a long line of people waiting to be checked out, and I have forgotten how to operate the cash register! When I wake up, I am tired and aggravated. What a way to start the day!

Then I have my “Return to School Dreams” where I am looking for a class that I haven’t attended all semester and the final exam is being given. I don’t know where the classroom is located and I don’t know what is on the test, but I am asking total strangers if they know where the test is being administered. Even though I know I am going to fail, I am ready to take the test anyway. The dream changes from time to time, when on the last day of class, I realize I have not turned in a research paper and I am going to fail. Either way, I feel in a panic when I wake up and the idea of not completing something has always brought out the worst in me!

However, I do have some religious dreams from time to time. I am not saying they are visions or special revelations from the Lord, but they always make me think. A few nights ago I had a dream that I was holding a box of matches, and just a few unused matches were in the box. The Lord was standing next to me and He told me to preach on the unused matches. When I woke up, I thought, “What a great sermon idea, “until I questioned, “Are matches even in the Bible?” Then I started thinking, looking for a deeper meaning than just matches. If you considered that your life was a match, how would you use it? Would you waste it on something that wasn’t going to stay lit, or would you use your match for something that would be a blessing to yourself and others and last forever?

Psalm 119:35-37 says, “Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things.”

I would call this Scripture a “Daytime Dream,” because the writer was envisioning the way he wanted to live. It is very important to know what you want in life, and things that will bring you joy. The writer said that he would “delight” in walking in God’s path.

When is the last time you have “Daydreamed” about being in God’s will on a daily basis? If you want your life to matter for the glory of God, then give your all to Him!

Remember, don’t give in to sin. Think about it!
