Be A Living Sermon

Recently I heard a children’s message that highlighted the “Top 10 Things That Make Christmas Special.” Almost half were things like “people are nicer to each other”, “people are more generous”, “people smile more” and “people are kinder to strangers”. At Christmas time it seems to me that Christians act more like Christ than at other times of the year. We have more love for God and for our neighbor. We try harder to practice our faith. Sometimes we can forgive at Christmas when we couldn’t let it go in July. We can dare to hope for a better world at Christmas and ask God to show us how to let our light shine brighter.

The increase in kindness, generosity and hope during Christmas are spiritually attractive. How we practice our faith can draw those around us to the Lord at Christmas because no matter how technologically advanced we become – people still long for a meaningful relationship with God. The world may focus on Santa Claus and materialism, but behind it all is a spiritual longing for the greatest gift of all. People want to love and be loved. The birth of Jesus may sound like a fairy tale to people outside our faith but at Christmas even some hard-core non-believers dare to hope that it is true and would follow us to the Lord if we would lead them.

At Christmas we may feel more hope for those in our life who are lost trying to live without God. We don’t have to stress out trying to figure a way to lead people to a new life in Christ. All we have to do is live our faith before them. Many people will consider going to church one time a year at Christmas, but we can give them a reason to hope all year long if we would be a living sermon every day before them.

This reminds me of the famous poem by Edgar Guest:

I'd rather see a sermon
than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me
than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil
and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing,
but example's always clear;
And the best of all preachers
are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action
is what everybody needs.
I soon can learn to do it
if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action,
but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver
may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons
by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you
and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding
how you act and how you live.

So be a living sermon at Christmas and every day of the year.

Matthew 5:14-16 --- 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
