My Resolution List In Reverse

Dr. Vince Hefner, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Cherryville, NC

Are you going to make any New Year Resolutions this year? I have never made it a big deal, but the new year is a good time to start with some new habits that should be helpful to yourself and others. I looked up the most popular resolution for the new year and it is to save money. The second is to lose weight! I guess you could save money by not eating out in fancy restaurants where the menu is not lit up by a bright bulb and flashing lights!

I have decided to do my resolutions in reverse. Instead of deciding what I am wanting to do for the new year, I have decided to look at my life and decide not to do certain things. First, I do not want to make decisions based upon my feelings but upon the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Feelings are important to have, and important to consider when you are making a decision, but feelings can change based upon circumstances. Take for example the feeling you get when you want to buy something. You get excited, purchase the item, bring it home, and it is yours. You feel the item is going to change something about yourself for the good, whether it is a piece of clothing, exercise equipment, or piece of furniture. Then it happens, the feeling that you thought you would feel changes to a feeling of uncertainty on whether you spent your money wisely. I have never bought anything that made me feel like I thought it was going to make me feel when I bought it. I am not going make decisions based upon my feelings in 2019!

Secondly, I am not going to make decisions based upon personal pride. It is easy to do something or say something that is based upon putting yourself in a positive light to others. If you are doing something just to impress someone else, then you are doing it for the wrong reason. Motive is very important to our actions and the wrong motive will eventually produce the wrong results. The best way to discover your motive is to examine yourself in light of Scripture and make sure that your motive lines up with what honors God. Make sure 2019 is full of the right motive for every decision that you make!

Thirdly, I do not want my prayers to be self-serving. I believe it would be a good exercise to write down your prayers for a week. This will help you see what you are praying for on a regular basis, as well as who you are praying for on a regular basis. I hear people say, “I’m praying for you!” and I see people on social media who write they are praying for a situation, but only God knows how much people pray about those situations. I want to make sure that I am praying for more than my well being or the desires of someone else. I want to make sure that my prayers are for God’s will to be accomplished on earth as it is in Heaven. I want God to work through my life and not around my life.

Fourthly, I do not want to be a hinderance to someone else who is looking for Jesus in their life. Consider people who do not have faith in Christ and watch your life to see if you live what you claim to believe. If your actions and attitude are contrary to what Christ commands His disciples to be, then your life will be a hinderance to a non-believer. A self-righteous or bitter spirit will never bring someone to Christ! I pray that my actions will portray the King of Glory and not the king of self! Ephesians 5:1,2 says, “And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering as a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” We don’t know what 2019 holds in store for any of us, but we can choose to be the person that God wants to use to encourage those who are around us to trust in Him. Remember, don’t give in to sin. Think about it!
